Richard Elliott Arrested After Travelling Wrong-Way in Chandler Rush Hour

Chandler, AZ (July 20, 2018)- A driver, Richard Elliott, going the wrong way was stopped and arrested on the San Tan freeway. This incident could have been much worse and possibly fatal, if troopers hadn’t acted quickly, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Richard Elliott, 73, of Phoenix, was driving a red pickup truck driving east in the westbound lanes on the I-10. He was first spotted in morning rush hour on Wednesday near Elliot Road.

The Arizona Department of Transportation Traffic Operations Center and troopers, like Sgt. Matthew Kunda, coordinated to help stop the wrong-way driver.

Richard Elliott was heading on the eastbound Loop 202 driving about 50 miles per hour. Trooper Jordan Stevens used evasive maneuvers and moves to slow down westbound traffic.

The pit maneuver used by Sgt. Kunda in his unmarked SUV to stop Elliott. All troopers were lauded as quick thinking and congratulated as saving lives this day.

Impairment hadn’t been ruled out, and Richard Elliott was taken to the hospital prior to being taken to jail. Elliot had mood swings and defecated in his pants multiple times. He also appeared dazed.
