Suspect Arrested Following Officer-Involved Shooting in Hayward, California

Hayward, California — October 8, 2025:
Authorities have identified 40-year-old Jaime Mejia Lopez as the suspect arrested after an officer-involved shooting with the Hayward Police Department on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the incident began around 4:12 p.m. when dispatch received a report of a man armed with a handgun near a neighborhood in Hayward. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and located a suspect matching the witness description.

Before officers could exit their vehicles, the suspect allegedly crouched behind a parked car and pointed a pistol at responding officers. Police say an exchange of gunfire followed between three Hayward officers and the suspect.

No one was struck by gunfire. The suspect sustained a minor thumb injury and was treated at a local hospital before being booked into jail.

Police identified the suspect as Jaime Mejia Lopez, described as an unhoused Hayward resident. He faces multiple charges, including three counts of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

This was the first officer-involved shooting reported by the Hayward Police Department in 2025.

The department confirmed that multiple investigations are underway. The Internal Affairs Unit is reviewing whether the officers’ actions followed departmental policy, while the Homicide/Major Assaults Unit is conducting a criminal investigation. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has been notified.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials emphasized that conclusions about the use of force will not be drawn until all evidence is reviewed.
