Honolulu, Hawaii — October 2, 2025: Authorities identified Sonny Siofele, age 50, as the man shot and killed by officers with the Honolulu Police Department near Punchbowl Street and South Beretania Street.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a local hospital after receiving a report that a man had arrived expressing suicidal thoughts and claimed to be in possession of a firearm. When officers located Siofele outside the facility, they say he pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers.
Police reported that officers fired their weapons, fatally striking Siofele. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.
The Honolulu Police Department’s Professional Standards Office and the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office are conducting independent reviews of the shooting. Officials confirmed that body-worn camera footage was captured and will be reviewed as part of the investigation, which remains pending.
