Woman Killed, Man Critically Injured in Head-On Crash on U.S.1 in Florida Keys

Deputies said a 44-year-old woman from Jacksonville was heading southbound in a Kia sedan when she drifted into the northbound lane and crashed head-on with a Ford pickup truck.

Florida Keys, FL. – A woman was killed and a man sustained critical injuries after a head-on collision on Tuesday morning in Florida Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. on September 23 near mile marker 19 on Summerland Key.

Deputies said a 44-year-old woman from Jacksonville was heading southbound in a Kia sedan when she drifted into the northbound lane and crashed head-on with a Ford pickup truck.

The woman, who had recently moved back to the Keys, was rushed to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Her dog was also killed in the collision.

The Ford driver, a  63-year-old man from Sugarloaf Key, was flown to a Miami-Dade County Hospital and was listed in critical condition.

The two drivers were wearing seatbelts after the crash.

Authorities said they are yet to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

Deputies shut down U.S.1 for around an hour to give way for an on-scene investigation.

An investigation is underway.
