Trooper Injured in DUI Crash on I-75 near Mile Marker 64 in Collier County

Collier County, FL. – A trooper was severely hurt following a traffic collision early Sunday morning in Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at about 3:18 a.m. on April 12, on northbound 1-75 near mile marker 64.

Troopers said a marked FHP patrol car was parked at an angle partially blocking the outside travel lane and shoulder with  emergency blue lights activated. The car was not occupied at the time.

A state trooper was standing on the paved shoulder helping a disabled driver when a Toyota sedan heading north approached in the outside lane. The front of the Toyota crashed into the left front side of the patrol vehicle. The impact was so violent that it tore off the Charger’s left front tire and bumper. The crash debris then hit the trooper.

The trooper was severely injured and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Toyota driver, a 32-year-old Sarasota man, was not hurt in the collision. He was arrested and charged with DUI. His blood alcohol content of .159 was nearly twice the legal limit.

He was taken to the Collier County Jail.

An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol is underway.
