
Oxford, FL. – A 16-year-old teen was killed, three other teens injured following a high-speed fiery collision on Monday afternoon in Oxford, Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred a while before 3:00 p.m. on August 4, on southbound I-75.
Troopers said a 17-year-old boy was driving a Dodge Charger recklessly at a high rate of speed when he veered off the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle burst into flames after the accident.
The driver alighted from the vehicle and ripped off the license plate before fleeing the scene.
All the four Dodge passengers, ages from 13 to 17 years old were hospitalized. A 16-year-old boy from Inverness later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver was later found by troopers hiding in a chicken coop near I-75. The 17-year-old boy faces charges of vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene of a crash causing death.
An investigation is underway.
