LaPorte County, IN. – Multiple people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving two mini-buses on Thursday afternoon in LaPorte.

According to the LaPorte County Indiana Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 3:16 p.m. near U.S. 20 and Fail Road, between Rolling Prairie and Michigan City.

The New Prairie United School Corporation buses were transporting student-athletes when they were involved in a four-vehicle collision involving a box truck.

Two coaches and seven student-athletes were injured in the accident.

One student was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver of the box truck, Shawn Wesly Russell Akison, of Romeoville, Ill., was arrested after he was determined to have been driving recklessly before the collision.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the accident.
