LaSalle County, ILL – One person was killed and five juveniles were injured following a two-vehicle traffic collision on Interstate 80 near Ottawa Monday evening, according to Illinois State Police.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on May 5 on Interstate 80 eastbound at milepost 86, according to a spokesperson for Illinois State Police
Investigators said a truck-tractor semi-trailer and a minivan were involved in the collision. The preliminary investigation showed that the minivan, operated by a 30-year-old Joliet man, struck the rear of the truck-tractor semi-trailer.
The impact caused the minivan to leave the roadway and overturn, leaving a 36-year-old passenger dead. The name of the victim remains under wraps pending next of kin notification.
Five juveniles were airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The freeway was shut down for several hours and all lanes were reopened at approximately 11:28 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
