Lane County, OR – One person was killed and another was seriously injured Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle accident in Lane County, according to the Oregon State Police.

Police said Kennith James Nelsen, 56, of Coos Bay, was driving a white Dodge Caravan southbound when he tried to turn into the emergency vehicle turnaround from the slow lane and hit the side of a gray Dodge Charger driven by Timothy Brian Smith, 59, of Springfield. The Charger attempted to avoid the collision by swerving towards the median. The impact sent the Charger into the northbound lanes where it went beneath a white Kenworth dump truck towing a loaded trailer driven by Jaison William Karow, 44, of Coos Bay.
A passenger in the Dodge Charger, Kenneth Nicholas Thomas, 61, of Springfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Nelsen and Karow were uninjured in the accident.
The authorities are investigating the accident.
