Gary Johns Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash at U.S. Highway 1

Fort Pierce, FL.- 71-year-old Gary Johns has been identified as the person killed after a multi-vehicle collision on Monday in Fort Pierce, according to the Fort Pierce Police Department.

The accident happened at about 12:13 p.m. at the U.S. Highway 1 and Edwards Road intersection.

Police said a white Kia Sportage operated by Rocco Bhagarattie, 37, was heading north on U.S. 1 Highway when he sideswiped a Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) pole before driving north on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed and slammed into a Cadillac DeVille.

The Kia then overturned at the junction and collided with three more cars.

The Cadillac driver, Gary Johns, 71, was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Bhagarattie and two other drivers were hospitalized with injuries.

A total of seven cars were involved in the collision.

Police said a “medical-related emergency” contributed to the collision.

The intersection was closed down for eight hours following the accident.

An investigation is underway.
