Danville Man Killed in Work Accident on I-74 in Champaign

Deputies said the man was working on the roadway in an active construction zone when he was hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer.

Champaign, IL. – A Danville man, a 64-year-old man of Danville, was killed in a construction work accident on Wednesday in Champaign, according to the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.

The accident occurred at around 3:35 a.m. on May 27, on eastbound I-74 near the southbound exit to Interstate 57.

Deputies said the man was working on the roadway in an active construction zone when he was hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer. 

He was declared dead at the scene at about 4:45 a.m.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

The eastbound lanes of I-74 were closed for several hours and traffic diverted onto southbound I-57. Drivers were asked to use alternate roads including Curtis Road and the Marker Street exit to access Champaign.

An investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office is ongoing.
