Charles Clinard Killed in Crash Involving IDOT Vehicle on Illinois Route 16 in Coles County

Authorities said a pickup truck hit an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) maintenance vehicle that was helping with reconstruction of an accident that happened in the area at around 5:43 p.m.

Charles Clinard Dies After Accident on Illinois Route 16 and Lerna Road

Coles County, IL. –  61-year-old Charles Clinard of Mattoon sustained fatal injuries following a traffic collision on Thursday night in Coles County.

According to the Coles County Sheriff’s Office, the deadly crash happened at around 8:53 p.m. on July 10, on Illinois Route 16, east of Lerna Road near the Coles County Memorial Airport.

Authorities said a pickup truck hit an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) maintenance vehicle that was helping with reconstruction of an accident that happened in the area at around 5:43 p.m.

The impact caused the IDOT car to rupture its fuel tank and the two vehicles burst into flames.

IDOT employees were not in the car and were not hurt.

Clinard was declared dead at the crash site.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit helped with road closure following the accident. The roadway has since been reopened.

An investigation is underway.
