Tucson, AZ – A motorcyclist was killed on Friday in a traffic accident in Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD).

The deadly accident happened just after noon, May 23, at the intersection of East Escalante Road and South Houghton Road.

PCSD said 53-year-old Abel Balderaz was riding a Harley-Davidson northbound on Houghton Road and was lane-splitting between vehicles before he entered the intersection. A Hyundai Sonata was turning left when it collided with the motorcycle.

Witnesses said Balderaz was speeding and had ran a red light before the collision. He was ejected from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The Sonata driver was uninjured in the accident.

Impairment was not a factor in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.
