Indian River County, FL. – A 3-year-old boy critically injured in a traffic collision that killed his 26-year-old mom died days after the wrong-way crash on Saturday night in Indian River County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at about 10:05 p.m. on May 9, in the northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike near Mile Marker 173.5.
Troopers said the woman was heading south in the northbound inside lane in a 2025 Kia K4 when the Kia crashed head-on into a northbound 2023 Chrysler Pacifica.
The Kia veered into the grassy median and rested facing south. The Chrysler spun into the outside lane and hit a 2017 GMC Canyon traveling beside it before it came to a halt in the inside lane.
The Fort Pierce woman was declared dead at the crash site.
A 3-year-old in the Kia sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. The boy succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, May 14.
A 5-year-old boy in the Kia suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The Chrysler driver, a 22-year-old Margate man, and three passengers from Royal Palm Beach sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
The GMC driver and one passenger were not hurt in the crash. Another GMC passenger sustained minor injuries due to the crash.
The northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike were closed for several hours overnight before reopening at about 6:15 a.m.
No additional information concerning this crash was provided.
