Police said a car was driving on the freeway when it veered off the roadway and hit a tree head-on.

Mt. Vernon, IL. – Two women were killed following a deadly collision early Sunday morning east of Mt. Vernon, according to the Illinois State Police.

The accident occurred at about 3:57 a.m. on March 1, on I-64.

Police said a car was driving on the freeway when it veered off the roadway and hit a tree head-on.

The driver, a 61-year-old woman and her passenger, a 61-year-old woman, all from Ames, Iowa, died in the collision.

The driver was declared dead at the scene while the passenger died an hour later at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

No additional information concerning this crash was provided.
