Deschutes County, OR. – Two people were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Monday night in Deschutes County.

According to the Oregon State Police, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Highway 20 near milepost 51.

A Freightliner commercial motor vehicle and trailer had come to a stop in a jackknifed position across both lanes, with the tractor facing eastbound, when a westbound Subaru Outback then collided with the trailer at highway speeds

A Springfield man operating the Subaru and his passenger, a John Day woman, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck operator, a Fresno man, was not injured.

He was later arrested on charges including Criminally Negligent Homicide and Reckless Endangering and booked into the Deschutes County Jail.

Authorities noted that dark conditions and the absence of active emergency warning equipment were factors in the crash.

 The incident remains under investigation.
