Troopers said three commercial semi-trucks carrying trailers and four passenger cars were involved.
Collier County, FL. – One person was killed after a multi-vehicle accident on Friday morning in Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision happened at about 12:11 a.m. on southbound I-75 at Mile Marker 96.
Troopers said three commercial semi-trucks carrying trailers and four passenger cars were involved. One of the semi-trucks operated by a 41-year-old man from Miami was halted within the travel lane due to low visibility caused by smoke caused by a prescribed burn from Picayune Strand State Forest in Collier County on Wednesday.
A second semi-truck operated by a 44-year-old man from Lakeland slammed into the rear of the semi-truck causing a chain reaction collision.
The vehicles involved included; a third semi-truck operated by a 61-year-old man from Deerfield Beach,an Audi operated by a 49-year-old man from Coral Springs, a Toyota operated by a 32-year-old Man from Miami, a GMC pickup truck driven by a 48-year-old from Boca Raton,a Chevrolet pickup truck occupied by a 52-year-old man from Madeira Beach, along with two passengers, a 38-year-old female and a 15-year-old male.
The 52-year-old Madeira Beach man was killed in the accident.
The female and the teen Chevrolet pickup truck occupants suffered severe injuries and were rushed to a local hospital.
The Audi driver was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Both north and southbound lanes at MM-101 southbound and MM-80 northbound were closed due to the collision.
The northbound lanes reopened at around 8:00 a.m.
The incident remains under investigation.
