Deputies said two children were standing on the west side of Crystal Beach Road and were trying to cross the street when they were hit by a northbound truck as they were walking towards the church.

Polk County, FL. – One child was killed and another was injured after a hit-and-run pedestrian collision Wednesday night near Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven in Polk County, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on March 11 near 2140 Crystal Beach Road.
Deputies said two children were standing on the west side of Crystal Beach Road and were trying to cross the street when they were hit by a northbound truck as they were walking towards the church.
One child, an 8-year-old, was killed in the crash. The other child, a 10-year-old, was critically injured and suffered a skull fracture and a broken leg due to the collision.
The two kids are not siblings and had attended a church function when the accident happened.
The truck driver fled the scene after the crash.
