Denny Winslow Shot and Killed by Manteo Police After 911 Call

Manteo, North Carolina — October 2, 2025: Authorities identified Denny Winslow, age 49, as the woman shot and killed by an officer with the Manteo Police Department outside her home on Mother Vineyard Road.

According to police, officers responded to a 911 call placed by Winslow, who reported that there was a man at her residence. When officers arrived, they allege that Winslow confronted them in the driveway while holding a knife. After she reportedly ignored commands to drop the weapon and moved toward police, an officer opened fire, fatally striking her.

Following an investigation by the district attorney’s office, the shooting was ruled justified. Prosecutors stated that while the situation was tragic, the officer acted lawfully when Winslow advanced toward him with a weapon.
