The depths of summer is here in Chicago and the heat is on. Chicago offers many outside activities at the lakefront and across the City. But high temperatures and high humidity bring the risk of heat exhaustion.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include the following:
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Fainting or Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle Cramps
- Also, Nausea and Vomiting
- Sweating
- Lastly, Rapid Heartbeat
If you, or anyone else with you, displays any combination of these symptoms, it is important that the person immediately gets out of the sunlight and heat, and moves directly into a cool and shady place. It is also critical to drink water or other fluids (avoid caffeine and alcohol). A cool shower or bath, or at least an ice towel may be used to cool off. After experiencing heat exhaustion, a person may be more vulnerable to high temperatures for the following days or a week, and it is important to avoid extreme heat until after consulting with a doctor. Children, senior citizens and others with serious medical conditions are most vulnerable to heat exhaustion.
Some common sense steps will help to avoid heat exhaustion: light clothing; a spray bottle; bandanas; sunscreen and the occasional dip in the pool or lake throughout the day will help keep you cool. Chicago is an exciting place in the summer with a long list of outdoor summer activities. Enjoy the activities, but be smart about the heat and possible heat exhaustion.
