Brevard County, FL. – A Vero Beach woman, 71, was killed and a 66-year-old Vero Beach man was severely hurt after a traffic collision on Tuesday afternoon near Mims, Brevard County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened at around 5:03 p.m. on June 9, on southbound I-95 near mile marker 231, just north of Deering Parkway.
Troopers said, a 2023 Acura RDX operated by a 24-year-old Titusville woman, a Buick LaCrosse driven by a 26-year-old Daytona Beach man, a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox driven by the 66-year-old Vero Beach man, and a 2021 Ford F-150 driven by a 53-year-old Melbourne man were involved in the crash.
The vehicles were traveling in the inside southbound lane when a semi-truck, possibly with an orange cab or trailer, was halted in the center lane causing the Ford F-150 and Buick LaCrosse to stop completely and the Chevrolet Equinox slowed for the traffic backup ahead. The Acura driver did not stop and crashed into the rear of the Chevrolet. The impact caused the Acura to rotate and its right rear hit the left rear portion of the semi-truck’s trailer. The chain-reaction collision forced the Chevrolet forward into the rear of the Ford pickup.
The initial crash caused the Acura to drive off the roadway to the left and it hit the inside shoulder guardrail. The Chevrolet partially rolled over the guardrail.
The 71-year-old Chevrolet passenger was declared dead at the crash site.
The Chevrolet driver was seriously hurt and was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The Acura driver and the Ford driver were not hurt and stayed at the crash site. The Buick driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Parrish Medical Center for treatment.
The semi-truck driver drove southbound on I-95 after the crash.
An investigation is underway.
