According to witnesses’ report, the driver of a parked car opened his vehicle and caused the bicyclist to lose control. The cyclist fell into a traffic lane where he was hit by a passing semi traveling behind him.

Bridgeport, IL. – A 35-year-old Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) employee was killed after a bicycle accident on Friday afternoon in Bridgeport.
According to the Chicago Department of Transportation officials, the crash occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on June 5, on Halsted Street and 32nd Street.
Officials said the male bicyclist was cycling his bicycle down on Halsted Street in the bike lane when the crash occurred. According to witnesses’ report, the driver of a parked car opened his vehicle and caused the bicyclist to lose control. The cyclist fell into a traffic lane where he was hit by a passing semi traveling behind him.
The 35-year-old man who was an advocate for bike safety, was killed in the collision.
The vehicle’s driver was cited for violating Chicago Municipal Code for unsafely opening his car door along with parking in a prohibited area, operating an uninsured car and driving on a suspended license.
The incident remains under investigation.
