Phoenix, AZ. – One person was killed after a traffic collision early Thursday morning in Phoenix, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The accident occurred at about 3:25 a.m. on I-17 near Union Hills Drive.

Officials said one car slammed into a median wall on the freeway in unclear circumstances. The driver, a man in his 60s, exited the vehicle and was struck by another car.

The man was declared dead at the crash site.

The driver of the second car was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities said northbound I-17 was closed and drivers asked to divert off at Union Hills Drive and Yorkshire Road.

It was not immediately known when northbound lanes would re-open.

An investigation is underway.
