Zachary Groff Dies After Being Tased and Struck by Car During Tampa Police Encounter

Tampa, Florida — October 7, 2025: Authorities identified Zachary Groff, age 35, as the man who died after being tased by officers with the Tampa Police Department and struck by a passing vehicle near N. Ashley Drive and E. Whiting Street.

According to police, officers located Groff during an investigation into an earlier armed burglary. When officers requested identification, Groff allegedly pulled out illegal drugs, at which point he was placed under arrest and handcuffed.

While officers were speaking with him, Groff reportedly ran away from police while still in handcuffs. An officer deployed a taser, which caused Groff to fall onto the roadway, where he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. He died from his injuries at the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Tampa Police Professional Standards Bureau are both investigating the incident. Officials have stated that body-worn camera footage has been released and will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Local and regional outlets including City of Tampa News, Tampa Bay 28, WFLA, Tampa Bay Times, and The Tampa Beacon reported on the fatal encounter, with bodycam footage showing the sequence of events leading to Groff’s death.
