Need tips for Burglar proofing your house?

136 burglaries happen every hour and homeowners in Chicago are 20 percent more likely to experience a crime to their property. However, there are several steps to start burglar proofing your home. How to better ensure that your home and loved ones remain safe.

Most burglars are criminals of opportunity. They are typically only going to target homes they can access easily without being detected.

Studies show thieves have found three common factors they use to determine whether or not they will rob a home:

  1. Time of Day
  2. Noise
  3. Visibility

These Five Tips Will Reduce The Chances of Your Home Being Burglarized

1. Install a home security system.
Research shows that homes without a security system are three times more likely to be broken into than homes with one. If you cannot afford a home security system, consider installing alarms that, once set, emit a loud noise whenever someone opens a door or breaks a window.

2. Deadbolt your doors.
34 percent of intruders enter through the front door, and another 22 percent come through the back door. One of the easiest and most cost-effective solutions is to install a deadbolt lock.

3. Get a dog.
While you should not rely on your dog as your primary means of home security, having a barking dog in the backyard of your house will make intruders think twice about attempting to break into your home.

4. Keep the outside of your house well-lit.
Intruders do not want to be seen. Installing lights on parts of the outside of your house that would allow your neighbors to see a suspicious person within 100 feet of your home, is an effective deterrent.

5. Be careful who you let into your home.
Anytime you let someone into your home, you give them the opportunity to steal from you right then and there. This also gives people an opportunity to see what you have and prepare to come back later.

Following these five tips will decrease the chances of someone trying to get into your home. If you think someone is in your home when you get there DO NOT go inside. Confronting a burglar can have far worse consequences than missing valuables.  These burglar proofing tips show any potential burglars the high chances of arrest.
