Steven Ainsworth Killed in Crash During Police Pursuit in Clear Creek County, Colorado

Floyd Hill, Colorado — October 14, 2025: Authorities identified Steven Ainsworth, age 51, as the uninvolved motorist killed during a police pursuit that ended in a fatal crash along Highway 6 near mile marker 259 in Clear Creek County.

According to officials, law enforcement officers from the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho Springs Police Department were pursuing a suspect reportedly involved in multiple vehicle break-ins. The fleeing vehicle struck police-deployed stop sticks and continued traveling on deflated tires. Moments later, the suspect’s car allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with Ainsworth’s vehicle, killing him at the scene. The suspect also died as a result of the crash. The investigation remains pending.

Authorities have stated that the pursuit began after reports of thefts in Summit County. The Colorado State Patrol assisted with the on-scene investigation to reconstruct the events leading to the fatal collision. Officials have not yet released details about whether pursuit protocols were followed during the chase.
