Authorities said 28-year-old Damon Johnson, of Salem, was driving a white Hyundai Accent, when he struck Jeremy Wanak, of Salem, who was on a bicycle.

Salem, OR – A 46-year-old cyclist was killed Thursday evening after being hit by an alleged drunken driver in South Salem, according to the authorities.
The deadly accident happened around 7:19 p.m. on July 10 in the 2000 block of Delaney Road SE.
Authorities said 28-year-old Damon Johnson, of Salem, was driving a white Hyundai Accent, when he struck Jeremy Wanak, of Salem, who was on a bicycle.
Wanak, who was a Sprague High School science teacher, was taken to Salem Health hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Johnson arrested on charges of first-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, reckless endangering and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was possibly driving at excessive speed. In 2017, he pleaded guilty to DUI and reckless driving and was sentenced to 18 months’ bench probation.
The authorities are investigating the accident.
