San Juan County, N.M. – Two bicyclists who were hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver in San Juan County early Saturday morning have been identified.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as 34-year-old Cody Newton and 54-year-old Francis Matias, both from Aztec.

Newton and Matias were struck by a vehicle operated by 35-year-old Jaron Todecheeny at about 1:48 a.m. on April 26 on Navajo Route 36 at mile marker 27.

Todecheeny was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle and drunken driving and, was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.

San Juan County, N.M. – Two bicyclists died after being hit by a car early Saturday morning in San Juan County.

According to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 1:48 a.m. on Navajo Route 36 near mile marker 27.

Officers who responded to the scene found two unresponsive bicyclists who had been struck by a 2006 Ford Ranger pickup.

The male and female bicyclists, both residents of Aztec, were pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The driver of the car, 35-year-old Jaron Todecheeny, was charged with homicide by vehicle and drunken driving and was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.

More details about the accident were not released.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
