June is National Safety Month. In an effort to help raise awareness about common preventable injuries, our LA personal injury attorneys put together these useful tips to help spread the word. Keep the following information in mind to avoid injuries and have a safe summer!
Guard Against Slip and Falls
When was the last time you did a safety check at home? Take a few minutes to walk through and around your home to make sure you don’t have any loose steps, unsafe rugs, extension cords draped across the floor, or other hazards that could cause you or guests to trip.
Be Careful with Parked Cars
Never leave infants, children, elderly people, or pets in a parked car, especially during the summer. Even if the outdoor temperature doesn’t seem very high, temperatures inside the car can quickly soar.
Keep Your Private Pool Safe
If you own a pool, make sure you have a secure fence around it with high locks, a safety flotation device, and posted warning signs not to swim alone. Furthermore, if you have young children, take extra precautions by making sure that your house doors are alarmed or don’t open easily into your pool area.
Take Precautions in Hotel Rooms
Plan on traveling and staying in a hotel room? Make sure you know where the nearest fire exits, alarms, and extinguishers are located. Also, check your room for potential hazards if you have young children.
Wear Proper Equipment for Sports
Wear the proper equipment if you’re participating in recreational activities and make sure your kids do the same. Mouth guards should be worn during contact sports, and use helmets while bicycling or skating to help protect against concussions.
Supervise Children Closely at the Playground
Make sure any playground equipment is well maintained and safe before your kids get on it. Some surfaces can get hot enough to burn exposed skin on sunny days. You also want to ensure there aren’t any exposed hazards or broken pieces on the equipment.
Leave Fireworks to the Pros
Fireworks are amazing to see and enjoy when they are launched high and into the evening sky. Up close and personal, they can be the cause of an emergency room visit for treatment of severe burns and injuries. That’s why it is best to leave fireworks to the professionals. If you’re going to light personal fireworks, make sure to take precautions and to keep your loved ones at a safe distance away so they remain unharmed.

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but with busy schedules and daily distractions a friendly reminder is never a bad thing. And since June is National Safety Month, it is the ideal time to highlight ways you can help keep your loved ones safe.
