DPS said an 18-year-old woman was driving a sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway when she collided head-on with a pickup truck.

Phoenix, AZ – A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition following a wrong-way traffic collision along Interstate 17 in Phoenix early Wednesday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The deadly collision happened at about 3:20 a.m. on southbound Interstate 17 at 7th Avenue

DPS said an 18-year-old woman was driving a sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway when she collided head-on with a pickup truck.

The woman was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

The man driving the pickup truck suffered life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.

Motorists experienced delays on I-17 for several hours. Traffic on the freeway stretched well past the Durango Curve and onto I-10.

The freeway was reopened was reopened at about 7:30 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
