Troopers said two drivers were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving following a series of accidents and a police chase early Saturday morning in Tampa.
Tampa, FL.- Two drivers were arrested following multiple DUI related accidents early Saturday morning in Tampa, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers initially responded around 3 a.m. on July 18 to a three vehicle accident on Interstate 4.
While investigating the collision, troopers contacted 22 year old Julian Arriaga Mendoza and observed signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Authorities said Mendoza admitted he had not seen the other vehicles before the collision.
Mendoza completed field sobriety exercises but refused to provide a breath sample. He was arrested on charges of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to testing.
While troopers remained at the scene, a Mercedes SUV struck the rear of a tow truck that was removing vehicles from the roadway after its occupants reportedly shouted at those involved in the accident.
Authorities said the driver, identified as 40 year old Demario Carlos Morales, fled after troopers attempted to stop him, leading officers on a pursuit that ended near Pierce Street and East Henderson Avenue.
Troopers said Morales also showed signs of impairment and refused testing. He was arrested on charges including DUI, property damage, and hit and run.
The accident remains under investigation.
