Woman Killed, Deputy Seriously Hurt in Accident on State Road 16 in St. Augustine

Investigators said a 68 year old woman was killed and a St. Johns County deputy was seriously injured following an accident Saturday night on State Road 16 in St. Augustine.

St. Augustine, FL.- One person was killed and a deputy was seriously injured following an accident Saturday night in St. Augustine.

The accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. on July 18 on State Road 16 at Stratton Boulevard.

Investigators said the 68 year old woman was turning left onto State Road 16 eastbound from Stratton Boulevard when she pulled into the path of a St. Johns County deputy who was traveling westbound in the left lane.

The front of the deputy’s SUV struck the driver’s side of the woman’s SUV, causing her vehicle to spin into the eastbound left turn lane. The deputy’s SUV then crossed the eastbound lanes and struck a stop sign.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy, 30, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators said the woman was wearing a seat belt, while the deputy was not.

State Road 16 at Stratton Boulevard was closed in both directions following the accident before reopening around 2 a.m. Sunday.

The accident remains under investigation.
