Police said they attempted to pull a driver over at Sixth Street and Edwardsville Road when the driver sped off through a business parking lot, jumped a curb and drove southbound on Sixth Street. Police pursued the driver.

Wood River, IL. – Two people were killed following a traffic crash caused by a police pursuit on Thursday morning in Wood River, according to the Wood River Police Department.
The accident happened a while after 10:50 a.m. June 3, at Sixth Street and Edwardsville Road.
Police said they attempted to pull a driver over at Sixth Street and Edwardsville Road when the driver sped off through a business parking lot, jumped a curb and drove southbound on Sixth Street. Police pursued the driver.
The suspect drove recklessly, ran a red light off the intersection of Illinois Route 143 and Illinois Route 3 crashing into a vehicle that had two occupants.
The vehicle with two people inside burst into flames and the victims were declared dead at the scene.
The suspect tried to resist arrest, but he was subdued by police. The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The names of the victims were not immediately provided.
The Illinois State Police is investigating the accident.
