Troopers said a semi truck driver was killed following a two truck accident early Thursday morning on Interstate 95 near mile marker 276 in Ormond Beach.
Ormond Beach, FL.- A semi truck driver was killed following an accident involving two tractor trailers Thursday morning in Ormond Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on August 13 on southbound Interstate 95 near mile marker 276.
Troopers said one tractor trailer had struck a deer and became disabled in the outside lane of the interstate. The driver of the truck activated the vehicle’s hazard lights after becoming disabled.
According to investigators, another tractor trailer traveling southbound approached the disabled truck and struck it from behind.
The second tractor trailer caught fire following the rear end collision.
The driver of the second truck, identified as a 57 year old Jacksonville man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the disabled semi truck was not injured in the accident.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 95 remained closed for several hours while emergency crews responded to the accident, extinguished the fire, and cleared the damaged trucks from the roadway.
Traffic was diverted from Interstate 95 during the closure. The southbound lanes reopened around noon Thursday.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident remain under investigation.
