Authorities said two motorcycle riders were killed after a wrong way driver struck their motorcycle head on early Sunday morning on Interstate 74 near Knoxville.
Knoxville, IL.- Two people were killed following a wrong way motorcycle accident Sunday morning on Interstate 74, according to Illinois State Police.
The accident occurred around 2:13 a.m. on August 30 on westbound Interstate 74 near mile marker 55.
Troopers said a Chevrolet Malibu was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 74 when it collided head on with a motorcycle traveling west.
The motorcycle was occupied by a man from Moline and a passenger from Davenport, Iowa.
Both motorcycle riders suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Chevrolet Malibu was driven by 19 year old Brian Boyer of Monmouth.
Boyer suffered injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities said he was later released into custody.
Westbound Interstate 74 remained closed until approximately 8 a.m. while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the accident scene.
The Knox County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges against Boyer for aggravated DUI involving death and reckless homicide.
Authorities said Boyer was ordered held pending the outcome of the case.
The fatal collision remains under investigation.
