FDOT Road Ranger Killed in Accident on Interstate 75 near I-275 in Pasco County

Authorities said an FDOT Road Ranger was killed after being struck by a suspected drunk driver Sunday night on Interstate 75 in Pasco County.

Pasco County, FL.- A Florida Department of Transportation Road Ranger was killed following an accident Sunday night in Pasco County, according to authorities.

The accident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. on July 13 on Interstate 75 southbound near Interstate 275.

Officials said FDOT Road Rangers had responded to assist with an earlier two vehicle accident on the interstate. A 24 year old Brandon man was outside his vehicle attempting to establish a lane closure when he was struck by an Acura MDX.

Investigators said the Acura traveled between two FDOT vehicles before striking the Road Ranger.

The 24 year old Road Ranger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the driver as 40 year old Darren Jenkins. Investigators said a breath sample showed an alcohol concentration of 0.334, more than four times the legal limit.

Jenkins was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter before being booked into the Pasco County Jail.

The accident remains under investigation.
