5 Seriously Hurt in Head-On Accident on Highway 97 in Escambia County

Troopers said five people were seriously injured following a head on accident Monday morning on Highway 97 south of Walnut Hill in Escambia County.

Escambia County, FL.- Five people were injured following a two vehicle head on accident Monday morning on Highway 97, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 5 a.m. on September 7 approximately half a mile south of Howell Road.

Troopers said a 23 year old McDavid man was driving a Nissan Rogue northbound on Highway 97 when the vehicle crossed the centerline.

The Nissan then collided head on with a southbound GMC Sierra.

Four people were traveling in the pickup truck, including its 37 year old driver, an adult female passenger, and two girls ages 3 and 6.

The pickup driver, adult female passenger, and 3 year old girl suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Pensacola hospitals as trauma alert patients.

The 23 year old Nissan driver and the 6 year old girl were also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding the conditions of the five injured people.

Highway 97 south of Walnut Hill remained closed for several hours while emergency crews assisted those involved, investigators examined the accident scene, and crews cleared the roadway.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
