Polk County, FL – Two drivers were killed and a third person was critically injured following a head-on car accident on Highway 27near Frostproof, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The deadly collision happened at about 10 p.m. May 8 on U.S. 27, about a quarter-mile north of Bay Street in the unincorporated Sun Ray community.
Authorities said a 2021 black Toyota Corolla, operated by Crystal Loyd, 41, of Sebring, was traveling northbound in the left southbound lane of U.S. 27 and collided head-on with a red Nissan Altima that was heading south in the left southbound lane.
Toyota caught fire and came to rest facing north in the left turn southbound lane.
Crystal Loyd was pronounced dead at the scene, PCSO said, adding that she was the person in the car at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Nissan, a 32-year-old Kissimmee man, was ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. PCSO said.
A passenger in the Nissan, a 31-year-old Kissimmee woman, had to be extricated and was airlifted with critical injuries to a local hospital, the release said.
No additional information is available at this time.
The crash remains under investigation.
