Police said an SUV attempted to cross an active railroad crossing when it was hit by the train.

Gary, IN. – Five people were killed in a train accident on Wednesday night in Gary, Indiana, according to the Gary Police Department.
The accident occurred at about 10:02 p.m. June 25, at the U.S. Route 20 and Utah Street intersection.
Police said an SUV attempted to cross an active railroad crossing when it was hit by the train. The SUV attempted to bypass the lowered crossing gates and entered the path of the oncoming train. The SUV occupants were thrown off the vehicle and the SUV extensively damaged following the crash.
All the SUV occupants were identified as De’Mario Craig, 24, Bryson Towns, 21, Sherise Parrish, 20, Latianna King, 20, and Maurice Parrish, 20. They all died in sustained multiple blunt force injuries and were declared dead at the crash site.
No one in the train was hurt.
The South Shore trains were suspended temporarily and have since resumed after the crash.
Toxicology tests to be conducted on all the victims.
An investigation by the Gary Police Traffic Investigator Detective T. Aguilar and the NICTD Transit Police Department is underway.
