Roswell, New Mexico – An individual was killed following a two-vehicle accident involving a Roswell Police officer on North Main Street in Roswell on Wednesday, according to Roswell Police Department (RPD).
The deadly collision happened at about 9:50 a.m. on January 22 on North Main Street between Sixth Street and Seventh Street.
A preliminary investigation revealed that an RPD officer was responding to another accident at the intersection of South Main Street and Poe streets when the police vehicle collided with an Oldsmobile.
Authorities said the police unit was traveling southbound on North Main Street while the Oldsmobile was traveling northbound on North Main. The driver of the Oldsmobile made a left turn and drove across two southbound travel lanes, coming directly into the RPD unit leading to the collision.
The Oldsmobile driver and the RPD officer were transported to a local hospital, where the civilian died.
North Main was shut down between 5th and 7th streets for about 4 hours. The roadway was reopened at about 1:30 p.m.
The incident remains under investigation.
