Crash Tests Highlight Differences in Minivan Safety

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, some minivans are just better at protecting your loved ones if you get in a crash. The IIHS announced the findings their tests of a trio of minivans; the Honda Odyssey, the Chrysler Pacifica, and the Toyota Sienna.

There are 4 IIHS ratings:

  • Good
  • Acceptable
  • Marginal
  • Poor

The IIHS subjected the three minivans to a small-overlap test simulating impact with a stationary object (like a tree or pole), both on the passenger and driver sides.

The Sienna did the worst, with a Marginal rating overall, partially due to a risk of a passenger sustaining leg injuries. In the driver’s side test, it scored an Acceptable rating, but the rating dropped to Marginal on the passenger side. Toyota upgraded the Sienna’s body structure in 2015, but did not change the passenger side, noted the IIHS.

The Pacifica earned an Acceptable rating, despite earning Good marks for the driver’s side tests. The drop in the overall score occurred due the passenger side testing, where the Pacifica earned an Acceptable rating.

The Honda Odyssey performed the best of the three tested, earning a Good score in both the driver’s and passenger’s side tests. The Odyssey and the Pacifica performed highly enough in these tests to earn the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick award.

Manufacturers do their best to make improvements to keep you and your loved ones safe.
