Troopers said a 30 year old bicyclist was killed after being struck by a semi trailer Wednesday at State Road 70 and U.S. Highway 441 in Okeechobee.
Okeechobee, FL.- A 30 year old bicyclist was killed following an accident involving a semi truck Wednesday in Okeechobee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred on September 2 at the intersection of State Road 70 and U.S. Highway 441.
Troopers said the bicyclist was traveling on State Road 70 and attempting to cross U.S. Highway 441 when the collision occurred.
At the same time, a truck tractor and semi trailer were making a right turn from westbound State Road 70 onto northbound U.S. Highway 441.
Authorities said the bicyclist was struck by the right side of the semi trailer.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the injured bicyclist to HCA Florida Raulerson Hospital for treatment.
The 30 year old man was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 6:47 p.m.
The semi truck driver was not injured in the collision.
Troopers said the truck driver initially left the scene but was later located with the truck approximately five miles away.
The main traffic light at the intersection was temporarily closed while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. Detours were put in place for motorists.
The fatal accident remains under investigation.
