2 Drivers Hurt in SUV and School Bus Accident on Route 37 near Mt. Vernon

Authorities said two drivers were injured following an accident involving an SUV and a small school bus Thursday afternoon on Route 37 near Game Farm Road south of Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon, IL.- Two drivers were injured following an accident involving an SUV and a school bus Thursday afternoon in the Bakerville area south of Mt. Vernon, according to Illinois State Police.

The accident occurred on August 20 on Route 37 near Game Farm Road.

Illinois State Police said the collision involved an SUV and a Durham Bus Service vehicle.

The school bus was transporting special needs students from Mt. Vernon Township High School at the time of the accident.

Three students remained aboard the bus when the collision occurred. Authorities said none of the students required transportation to a hospital for treatment.

The students’ parents or guardians responded to the scene and picked them up following the accident.

Jefferson Fire officials said the SUV appeared to cross the centerline before sideswiping the school bus.

Following the collision, the SUV left the roadway and came to a stop upright on the railroad right of way.

The school bus continued across the roadway before coming to a stop.

Both drivers suffered injuries in the accident. Authorities have not released their names or additional information regarding the severity of their injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
