Illinois State Police Trooper Hurt in Semi-Truck Accident on U.S. 50 in Clay County

Authorities said an Illinois State Police trooper was injured after his patrol vehicle struck the rear of a semi tractor trailer early Monday morning on U.S. Route 50 in Clay County.

Clay County, IL.- An Illinois State Police trooper was injured following an accident involving his patrol vehicle and a semi tractor trailer Monday morning in Clay County, according to Illinois State Police.

The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on August 17 on U.S. Route 50 at Big Four Road.

Authorities identified the injured trooper as Master Trooper Joshua Kiefer of rural Fairfield.

Police said Kiefer’s patrol vehicle struck the rear of a semi tractor trailer on U.S. Route 50.

Kiefer became trapped inside his patrol vehicle following the collision. Fire and rescue crews responded to the scene and worked to extricate him from the damaged vehicle.

The trooper was initially transported to Clay County Hospital in Flora for treatment.

Kiefer was later airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for additional medical care. Authorities said his injuries were considered non life threatening.

The driver of the semi truck was not injured in the accident.

U.S. Route 50 remained closed while an accident reconstructionist examined the collision and emergency crews worked at the scene.

The highway reopened at approximately 12:10 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
