3 Hurt in Fire Truck Accident at East 5th Street and Illinois Route 3 in Cahokia Heights

Authorities said three people, including a firefighter, were injured following a three vehicle accident involving a Cahokia Heights fire truck Saturday afternoon.

Cahokia Heights, IL.- Three people were injured following a multi vehicle accident Saturday afternoon in Cahokia Heights.

The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on August 8 at the intersection of East 5th Street and Illinois Route 3.

Authorities said a truck was traveling northbound on Illinois Route 3 at a high rate of speed behind a passenger vehicle while a fire truck was traveling southbound with its emergency lights activated.

Investigators said the passenger vehicle slowed for the approaching fire truck, but the truck behind it did not slow down and struck the rear of the passenger vehicle.

Both vehicles then crossed into the southbound lanes.

The fire truck attempted to avoid the collision, but both vehicles struck the front of the emergency vehicle. The impact forced the fire truck off the roadway, where it overturned.

The drivers of the truck and passenger vehicle were transported to an area hospital with injuries.

A firefighter was also hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

Southbound Illinois Route 3 was temporarily closed before later reopening.

The accident remains under investigation.
