Portland, OR. – An 85-year-old bicyclist died after being hit by an alleged intoxicated driver in Southeast Portland, according to the authorities.

The accident happened around 7:00 p.m. on July 13, near the intersection of Southeast 145th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.

Authorities said a 54-year-old Portland man told officers that he had been driving from his mother’s house and had been drinking before he got behind the wheel.

The driver then struck an 85-year-old man who was riding a bicycle near the intersection.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with major injuries, where he died on Monday, July 14.

The driver remained at the scene, and an officer who talked to him said that he had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. He was arrested and is likely facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and DUI.

An investigation is underway.
