A 31-year-old male from Guanajuato, Mexico, was outside his semi-trailer and was trying to add fuel when the box truck operator left the roadway and struck the driver side of the semi-trailer and the semi’s driver.

Shelby County, IL. – A semi-trailer operator was killed after a traffic collision on Saturday afternoon in Shelby County.
According to the Illinois State Police, the accident happened at about 3:35 p.m. on September 6, on I-57 at Milepost 172.
Police said a two-axle box truck was heading south on I-57 and a truck-tractor semi-trailer combination car had halted on the right shoulder. A 31-year-old male from Guanajuato, Mexico, was outside his semi-trailer and was trying to add fuel when the box truck operator left the roadway and struck the driver side of the semi-trailer and the semi’s driver.
The semi driver was declared dead at the crash site.
The box truck driver, a 38-year-old male from Milwaukee, WI, was not hurt. He was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid the collision.
Authorities closed I-57 and diverted traffic at exit 177 following the crash. The road was reopened a while before 10:00 p.m.
The Neoga Fire Protection District and Neoga Ambulance also assisted at the crash site.
An investigation is underway.
