Troopers said a blue 2024 International semi tractor trailer was hauling a box trailer in the outside lane and was attempting to make a U-turn in an “official use only” area along the turnpike.

St. Lucie County, FL. – Three people were killed after a semi tractor-trailer accident on Tuesday afternoon just south of the St. Lucie County north border.
According to the Florida Highway patrol, the accident happened a while before 3:00 p.m. August 12, on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 171.
Troopers said a blue 2024 International semi tractor trailer was hauling a box trailer in the outside lane and was attempting to make a U-turn in an “official use only” area along the turnpike.
The semi crossed over all northbound travel lanes and a black 2015 Chrysler Town & Country van couldn’t avoid it and the two vehicles crashed. The minivan was stuck underneath the left side of the trailer.
The two minivan passengers were declared dead at the scene a while before 3:15 p.m. The minivan driver was flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce where he succumbed to his injuries a while after 5:15 p.m.
The three occupants were identified only as a 30-year-old Florida City man, a 37-year-old Pompano Beach woman and a 54-year-old Miami man.
The semi tractor trailer occupants, 25 year-old and 28 year-old California Men were not hurt in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
