Helmin Ruiz and Trinidad Vasquez Killed in Car Accident on SR 9 in Columbia City

Police said a vehicle was carrying six people and was traveling south on SR 9 near CR 500 N, when it crossed the center line and drove into the northbound lane for reasons still under investigation.

Columbia City, IN. – 35-year-old Helmin Ruiz of Huntington and 40-year-old Trinidad Vasquez of Fort Wayne were killed, four others hurt after a traffic collision on Tuesday afternoon in Columbia City, Whitley County.

According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), the accident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. July 29, on State Road 9 at County Road 500 North.

Police said a vehicle was carrying six people and was traveling south on SR 9 near CR 500 N, when it crossed the center line and drove into the northbound lane for reasons still under investigation.

The vehicle then crashed into a black pickup truck and trailer operated by a 51-year-old man from Columbia City.

Ruiz, the vehicle driver, and one of his passengers Vasquez died in the collision. The four other persons in the vehicle were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The truck operator did not suffer severe injuries in the collision.

No other details regarding this incident were provided.

An investigation is underway.
