Apache Junction, AZ – One person was killed and another was injured Friday night in a wrong-way collision in Apache Junction, according to the Arizona DPS.

The fatal collision occurred around 9:00 p.m. on July 18 on U.S. 60 at Goldfield Road.

DPS said a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a black Volkswagen Jetta Sedan.

Both drivers were pulled from their vehicles and were taken to the hospital where the wrong-way driver, 71-year-old Laurie Ann Walters of Apache Junction, later died.

Impairment was suspected to have been a factor in the collision.

The DPS is investigating the accident.
